DIY Easter decorations - 3 tips & tricks

Making Easter decorations doesn’t have to be so complicated or expensive - you can go very far with just a few simple things that you have at home or can find in nature. A little clipping, gluing, and drying and poof! There you have it, the most delectable decorations! (... or at least the most creative). Forget using feathers from birds or synthetic feathers. Better for the animals and better for the environment!

Colourful eggs

You may have blown till you’re blue in the face trying to make these classic Easter ornaments. It can be quite a bit of work, but the result is terrific!

You will need:

• Raw eggs
• Drawing pin or needle
• Sewing thread
• Matches
• Paint
• A Bowl

1. Make a hole in both ends of the egg with a needle or pin. Be careful!
2. Hold the egg over a bowl and blow at one end so that the contents come out at the other end. Save the contents of the egg to make scrambled eggs, pancakes or anything else tasty with them.
3. Rinse the egg well and put it somewhere to dry, e.g. back in the egg carton.
4. Now you can decorate the egg however you want, either with paint, felt-tip pens, glitter, or sequins.

Tips: Place the egg on a kebab/cocktail stick or put it in an egg cup while painting.

If you want to hang the eggs: Break a matchstick in two and attach a piece of thread to it. Then insert the match through the largest hole in the top of the egg, and then place it crosswise. The matchstick should lie across the hole. The thread will come out of the hole and then you tie a knot.

After Easter, you can keep the eggs in an egg carton and use them every year!

Decorating is fun for both children and adults!

Yarn feathers

Another cool alternative to synthetic feathers is feathers made of thread or yarn. They look nice as decorations at Easter, in a wreath or suspended by a pretty ribbon.

What you need for the yarn feathers:

• Thread or yarn (in different colours if you wish)
• Balloons
• Sugar
• Water

This is what you do:

1. Mix the water with sugar and make sugar paste. Set aside.
2. Blow up the balloons to the desired size
3. Dip the thread into the sugar paste
4. Wrap the threads around the balloon
5. Let the thread dry (tip! put the balloon
6. Burst the balloon and then remove it.

Done! Decorate as desired and hang them up.

Instead of bird feathers - cloth feathers!

What about cloth feathers that you can put in your Påskris (a Swedish Easter decoration made up of decorated branches and twigs)? Find a worn shirt, a colourful cloth or some old cloth that you can make fine cloth feathers from. Use your imagination and make a nice Påskris of whatever you have at home.

You will need:

• Cotton cloth
• Yarn or sewing thread
• Scissors
• Iron
• Pen and paper / cardboard
• Double-sided sticky tape (at least 7.5 cm wide), available at hobby and craft shops

This is what you do:

1. Iron together the cloth with the double-sided tape. Start by ironing on one piece of cloth with the protective paper still on the tape. Then remove the protective paper and apply the second piece of cloth. The nicer side of the piece of fabric should be outward and the iron set to low heat.
2. Draw an outline of a feather in paper and cut it out.
3. Draw the outline on the cloth and cut again.
4. Fold back and forth with the dotted lines on the outline. Wrap some thread a few times around the fold and tie. (See the pictures above)
5. Put it together with the Påskris and tie the feathers on. Voilà!
