Clarion Hotel Bergen

Main selling point for the Clarion is their great breakfast spread. Comfy bed. Great location but minus the views to match. Street a little noisy at weekend but a clean and comfortable stay nonetheless. Tried to charge us extra to get into our room a few hours early despite it being ready. That was a first. We declined that offer and popped the bags into a store at reception to return after 3pm. First time we’ve encountered that in travelling and thought it was a bit of a con. What else were you going to do with the room for 2 hours?!

The hotel's main advantage is its location but with a 4 star rating I was expecting a bit more. At the top of my list of minor gripes was the lack of a room phone. Because I had been cruising for 12 days (and spending only one day off ship) I had not purchased a sim card so my phone was useless. I'm a senior citizen and know well how important it is to keep in touch. There was no printed material explaining what was in the hotel. I didn't realize until I was on my way out that there was a sauna. Overall my experience felt more spartan than I expected from a four star property.

Only had 1 night here prior to our Hurtigruten cruise. After being dumped at the bus stop in pouring rain we managed to find our way to hotel. Was hard work pulling large cases up the cobbles and the hill to the hotel. Once we had arrived we were able to check in straight away, which was a blessing. Our room was a long way away from reception and appeared to be in an other building. Had to negotiate some stairs which was a pain with the large cases, luckily we were fit and able to do this, sadly one of the group who had walking issues was left to find her own way to room and carry cases etc etc. The room itself as very hot, luckily the windows opened and stayed open all night ,no noise at all from outside. The shower was hard to operate so opted for bath instead, whilst laying in the bath could see the relevant button to use the show. As we were only staying 1 night didn't unpack the cases, it was tight in the room with these as no where to store them. Breakfast was usual buffet style with lots of choice, a bit chaotic with lots of people all trying to eat and be ready for 9.00 departure on guided tour. We opted not to do this so had time for a leisurely breakfast and kill so time before we departed. Hotel was only 5 mins walk to the waterfront and the famous painted houses, a nice stroll around here, luckily it had finally stopped raining.

A real gem of a find. The Clarion is a comfortable hotel, ideally located to explore the city on foot. We arrived early and asked to leave our cases until check in time, but our room was ready, so we checked in right away. The room was a little small and not much of a view, but we could not fault it otherwise. The staff were friendly and helpful and there was free coffee, tea or hot chocolate available through the day. The real star of the Clarion is the breakfast. Smoked salmon, Gravadlax , a selection of meats and cheeses and freshly baked bread - wonderful. There was also bacon and egg. The Clarion does not have a restaurant, but there are plenty of places to eat in the vicinity. Overall, a wonderful stay and we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel for a vacation in Bergen.

Great location! We stayed in a family room, which was spacious and had a minimalist, clean design—plus, no carpets! The location is fantastic, just a few minutes' walk from the train station and main attractions. Rooms are quiet. Hotel also offers a gym and sauna. The hotel also has an amazing breakfast buffet. Would definitely stay here again!
