Christmas in Tromso

A lovely hotel in a great location. Very comfortable room, friendly staff and great breakfast choices. The lounge area has large window, so you can relax with a drink and people watching.

We had a wonderful time here. The staff were excellent, friendly and helpful and very efficient. The room was a family room and had plenty of room for us 3 adults. The room was very quiet and very warm, with an excellent shower and toiletries. The beds were comfortable and clean. Breakfast was delicious (I have to buy a waffle maker now!) with a large variety, warm and tasty. We paid extra for the evening meal a couple of times 25 English punds and was delicious and a wide variety. The chef would come and talk to us about his dishes....you could tell he took pride in his food. The hotel is close to everything we wanted to see..shops, harbour, museums, restaurants, bars, bus stops/station. Some of our trips were cancelled because of the weather so we will be coming back to Tromso and we will definitely be booking to stay here.

Tromso is expensive and a booking on a Saturday/ Sunday night possibly the peak of the weekly cost cycle. We had both a superior double and a single room. Reception area is welcoming but the hotel really needs a lick of paint, new carpet (level 7 had carpet stains that I wouldn’t expect in a two star youth hostel!) and furnishing upgrades. Location is excellent and the buffet breakfast was one of the best we encountered on the trip. Checkout was at midnight of the second night and was rather underwhelming - guy was on the phone and not remotely interested.

We arrived at the hotel around 9 pm and were warmly welcomed by the receptionist, who efficiently checked us in and provided our room key along with helpful information about the hotel. I must mention that every staff member we encountered, both at reception and in the restaurant throughout our stay, was exceptionally friendly and hospitable. We stayed in a Compact Double Room for three nights. The room overlooked an atrium, facing other room entrances, which led us to keep the curtains closed throughout our stay. This was a bit of a downside, as it made the room feel smaller and darker. There was no safe in the room, so we had to carry our valuables with us and we found the beds a little uncomfortable, likely due to the thin mattresses which reminded us of a camping mattress. On the positive side, the bathroom featured a heated floor, which was fantastic for drying our shoes and socks after being out in the snow and rain. The room was also equipped with an ironing board, iron, hairdryer, and fridge. Although there were no in-room tea or coffee facilities, complimentary tea, coffee, and water were available 24/7 in the restaurant area, which was a great convenience. They even provided takeaway cups in addition to mugs. One unexpected aspect was that the rooms were not cleaned daily, a practice we hadn't encountered before. I believe the standard policy was to clean only between guests, although a sign at reception indicated that cleaning could be requested a day in advance. The hotel's ambiance was lovely and modern, though the rooms themselves (or at least the one we stayed in) were a bit dated and basic. Considering the reasonable price we paid (booked nearly a year in advance) and the fact that we were only there for 3 nights and out for most of the day/evening, this was acceptable. Breakfast was really lovely and included a wide array of traditional Norwegian foods, along with the usual juices, pastries, fruit, yoghurt, cooked items etc. The hotel's location was excellent, with everything we needed—restaurants, excursion pick-up points, bus stops, and supermarkets—within a 10-minute walk or less. As a tip, Tromso airport has limited amenities, so there's no need to arrive too early. We chose to take the bus to and from the airport, which stops directly opposite both the airport & hotel, takes about 15 minutes, and costs less than £2 each way. Overall, a great hotel for a short city break, with almost everything you could need. A few minor inconveniences, but that didn’t ruin our stay and they were outweighed by the positives.
