Could be amazing but just not quite as good as it should be

My husband, sister, brother-in-law & I spent two nights at the Ice hotel. One night in an ice room (with warm bathroom attached) and one night in a normal cabin. Unfortunately, our experience wasn’t the 5 star experience we’d hoped for. The good The dog sled from the airport was great fun and we all agreed we'd do that again The ice art is amazing, and we very much enjoyed walking around, looking at all the rooms, the Ice Bar and the chapel etc. The other experiences we booked were also fun. Two snow mobile (one at night and one in the day) and a cross-country ski walk. We all very much enjoyed the experience of sleeping on ice. The Bad This is the only hotel I have ever been to which doesn’t offer you a porter help with luggage, yet this is one of the hotels where you need that the most. Dragging luggage through snow & ice from reception, to your room, then back to reception and onto new room was a big effort. There should be porters to help and when changing rooms, the staff should move your luggage for you while you are our on an excursion, as they do in any other decent hotel. The food in the restaurant was overpriced, limited and not very good, but sadly there wasn’t really any alternative. We walked to town during the day and wanted to go back to eat at the Homestead in the evening, however, the walk during the day had been treacherous due to there being thick ice everywhere so we didn’t want to risk the walk at night. I asked if there was any transport option, but other than paying for a taxi to come all the way from Kiruna at a cost of around £50 for what would be a 5 min journey to town, there was no option. The hotel should invest in a shuttle service. I also wasn’t expecting the hotel to be full of day trippers. That meant the hotel was very crowded with nowhere to sit in the bar or reception area until all the day trippers left at 6pm.

The Ice Hotel was amazing! We celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary with an adventure to the Arctic Circle and had a blast. The art rooms, ice bar and architecture are wonderful, definitely museum quality. We slept well in our ice room in our warm and cozy sleeping bags. The staff was friendly and helpful in enjoying our experience.

We stayed at the ice hotel as a family of six. We enjoyed a cabin and two hotel rooms for two nights. The rooms were excellent and very cosy and warm. There is an area for boots and snow suits and everything is designed perfectly for a good night’s rest. The range of activities was superb and we booked well in advance to ensure places. The guides were helpful and made the experiences very informative and at the same time fun. We very much enjoyed the snowmobiling lunch, wilderness dinner, cross country skiing, dog sledding and sauna ritual. We spent one night in the ice rooms. Three ice rooms and one deluxe room with an en-suite warm bathroom. One member of staff in particular warrants a special mention. And that is Melker - this is why I have given 5 stars. Melker was always professional, informative and cheerful throughout our stay and went beyond and above to resolve a problem for me. This was calmly resolved with good humour and soon I was comfortably installed in a room in the 365 hotel that met my particular requirements. Thank you ice hotel for a trip of a lifetime!

I've wanted to visit the Icehotel for years and finally this year, I got to tick that off my bucket list. Oh - and also got engaged outside the iconic entrance on our first night :) The hotel is stunning and an incredible feat of engineering. Some of the artwork is phenomenal, some very nice and some just a bit weird/creepy. We stayed two nights - the first in one of the deluxe suites, the second in a standard warm room. Our suite was actually a bit "creepy" and included a female figure fully encased in ice and other figures trying to escape from ice blocks. It wouldn't have been what my partner would have chosen given his intention to propose - but that was the room we were allocated so... Some of the other suites were just stunning - unfortunately we definitely drew the short straw. That said, you obviously don't spend much time in the room given it's -5oC. The attached bathroom for the deluxe suite was fabulous - cosy, tea and coffee facilities, lots of space, private sauna, big bathtub, rainshower, private toilet etc. It was extremely expensive for us - but to be honest, we did get good use out of the warm bathroom area so was worth it as a treat! On our first night we kept an eye on the aurora app on our phones and so went outside when advised and sure enough we saw the aurora dancing overhead. We were fortunate and had already seen it elsewhere (with better shows) on our previous two nights but still it was pretty special, especially as we'd just got engaged. One thing we weren't really aware of was that if you're in the suite and in the warm room then come out into your ice-room, it can be filled with the day visitors taking photos - even well into the evening which is a bit strange. Also a weird anomaly is that the warm bathroom only locks during day visitor hours so for instance when we went to go to breakfast, we had to leave it open. Strangely it took about 20 minutes before a staff member told us this - as the first two people I spoke to couldn't really help - we thought there was a fault with our door. As others mention, they seem to have a lot of student type staff who whilst polite and friendly, aren't familiar with the workings of the hotel so can't really help with everything. The warm room was fine, spacious and comfortable but we missed the heated bathroom floor which we'd had at our Kiruna hotel! Given it was -18o when we stayed, it would have been very welcome. Breakfast was good with a large selection of food, We also ate both nights at the Homestead and really enjoyed it. I had read mixed reviews but hotel staff booked it for us (all very easily done) and we liked both the atmosphere and food in it. We used the airport shuttle service one way and it was easy to book with the hotel staff and worked well for us. We also enjoyed the cocktails at the icebar - and going down the quirky slide! The icebar is only open during daytime though so we had a late morning cocktail before leaving for our flight. I'm guessing as we stayed in the deluxe suite with the warm room, we weren't offered any of the snowsuits etc which others wore.
